Like CGI, Extending Children’s Mathematics (ECM) professional development is designed to enhance teachers’ ability to teach math for understanding by increasing teachers’ understanding of students’ mathematical thinking. The content focus is Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations, Fractions, The Number System, and Expressions and Equations as described in the Third through Sixth Grade CCSSM. Through a focus on students’ thinking, teachers improve their ability to enact the Standards for Mathematical Practice described in CCSSM. Extending Children’s Mathematics PD develops teachers’ ability to use any curriculum to teach math for understanding. Extending Children’s Mathematics is a new course that we will offer starting in the summer of 2012. This course is a substantial revision of the Thinking Mathematically course we offered previously. The course was developed in response to the CCSSM, feedback from our clients, and feedback from the teachers attending the course. Extending Children’s Mathematics will address third through sixth grades. Extending Children’s Mathematics professional development will focus on the properties of operations that unite the study of multiplication and division number facts, multi---digit multiplication and division, the base ten number system1, developing concepts of fractions as quantities, fraction operations and solving expressions and equations. Properties of addition and subtraction in the context of fractions and decimals will also be addressed. In response to feedback from clients, we will devote significantly more time to helping teachers learn to facilitate the standards of mathematical practices through whole group discussions, rehearsal, student interviews and classroom embedded professional development. - Lunch will be provided |
